Marrying RISCOS and Linux over your network The ExCOS5 is the external equivalent of the ECOS 5 internal module, providing the same Linux-based companion computing capability in a compact standalone enclosure. It is designed for RISC OS users who want the benefits of the ECOS 5 but prefer, or require, an external device rather than an internally fitted unit. Like the internal version, the ExCOS5 is powered by the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5, with a 2.4 GHz quad- core CPU. It comes with 4 GB of RAM as standard, and can be upgraded to 8 GB or 16 GB. Storage is provided by onboard eMMC in either 32 GB or 64 GB capacities, and an NVMe slot allows for the addition of high-speed SSD storage. The device connects to a RISC OS system via standard networking, allowing for file sharing, remote desktop operation, and integration between the RISC OS and Linux environments. It supports both wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi, meaning it can also be used entirely independently from the host system if required. ExCOS5 is small enough to be positioned unobtrusively on a desk or near a network point, with approximate dimensions of 71 × 99 mm. It is powered by a standard 5 V, 2 A USB supply, which can be provided by a router USB port or a dedicated power adapter. Like ECOS 5, it runs in parallel with RISC OS, enabling access to a complete Linux desktop for modern applications such as web browsing, office productivity, development tools, and multimedia software, all without disrupting the main RISC OS environment.
